After that, though she would rather go naked than wear it, her mother tries to dress her in an itchy sweater.

Fed up, she destroys the sweater then runs aw This review also appears on my blog, Read-at-Home Mom. Fed up, she destroys the sweater then runs away to Mrs.

Berg's house next door. Berg helps her set up shop in the attic, and Lotta plans to stay forever Like Ramona, Clementine, and Junie B.

Like Alexander in Judith Viorst's famed picture book, Lotta is having a bad day, and all she wants to do is escape.

Kids and adults of all ages can relate to this universal experience, and kids, especially, will be thrilled to live vicariously through Lotta's new life in the attic next door.

I think they will also love Mrs. Berg, who acts as a grandmotherly figure in Lotta's life, and whose approach to Lotta's anger at her parents is reminiscent of Mrs.

Piggle Wiggle. This is a chapter book, but a very short one, and many of Lotta's other stories - at least the ones at my library - are longer picture books instead.

The edition I read for this review actually came out in , with illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser, who draws Fancy Nancy.

Any Fancy Nancy fan who sees the cover of this book will be instantly drawn to it, if only to make sure it isn't about Fancy Nancy! Lotta on Troublemaker Street is also a great choice for preschoolers whose parents read them chapter books at bedtime.

The story perfectly embodies the mind of a real five-year-old, and kids will enjoy the comfort that comes from seeing an end to Lotta's terrible day.

This book is charming and funny, and thankfully, still in print! One Sentence Review: I'd like to shake the hand of whatever genius it was that thought to pair these older stories of Astrid Lindgren of Pippi Longstocking fame with the art of Robin Preiss Glasser of Fancy Nancy fame since it is clear that the combination renders this and the other books in the series completely and utterly timeless and I don't throw that word about every day, y'know.

This version of the story is somewhere between the original version and the Lotta Makes a Mess! The siblings' names are Jonas and Mary and, while the running away isn't part of the title, at least it is sort of included.

For me, the most interesting thing is that Mrs. Berg actually caters to Lotta's wishes. I am not sure I would have been so tolerant: helping her re-arrange the attic and decorate it, staying with her while she discovers and plays with the doll, and bringing her two meal This version of the story is somewhere between the original version and the Lotta Makes a Mess!

I am not sure I would have been so tolerant: helping her re-arrange the attic and decorate it, staying with her while she discovers and plays with the doll, and bringing her two meals.

I am not surprised at the mother's matter of fact attitude, but she the mother doesn't seem to abet Lotta's plans as much as Mrs.

Berg does. View 1 comment. And I love all of them, it is so nostalgic and fun. Astrid Lindgren was an amazing author. Written in this dear story is rather old fashioned.

Perfect for a four or five year old. Aug 31, Mark rated it liked it Shelves: in-possessions. Most probably, her most famous fictional character, Pippi Longstocking, the red haired girl with enormous strength, living on her own with just a monkey and horse for company and a pirate captain father.

But there is so much more to Astrid Lindgren, the famous Swedish writer. Astrid Lindgren has written so many more novels but most of them pale into insignificance thanks to the worldwide success of Pippi Longstocking.

Having grown up with novels by Astrid Lindgren and Enid Blyton and Erich Kästner , they continued to be a fond remembrance of my happy childhood.

But as far as I can remember, the story about a 3 year old girl name Lotta Nyman was the first Astrid Lindgren's book I read, back when I was just 5 y.

They were funny enough you're going to like Lotta ever since her first story. I never realized, I never knew.

I love this author. A lot. I have loved many writings by her and I never knew she was one and the same. Thank you Astrid Lindgren. For making me have such a lovely childhood with your lovely and entertaining and fun-filled and winsome and intelligent and creative words and images.

To me, your books are childhood memories and fantasies captured on paper. They burst and splash at you like a happy summer day of playing with the water hose.

Your books fill me with happiness I never realized, I never knew. Your books fill me with happiness and childish delight. Thank you.

Rest In Peace Astrid Lindren, writer of childhood contents. I just read this book to my daughter. She enjoyed it, but I don't remember Lotta being so naughty when I read it as a child.

She cuts up her sweater that her grandma made her because she doesn't like it and runs away from home. Maybe not the best ideas to be planting in a 5 year old head!

I also thought it strange that Lotta's mother leaves her at home while she goes shopping for the day. The story says that Lotta isn't old enought for school yet so she must be pretty young!

Lotta becomes angry with her mother when assigned to wear a scratchy sweater. She cuts the sweater up horrors!

Her next door neighbor lets her set up a little house in the backyard, and Lotta decides she will live there forever.

She dusts a lot. Lotta ends up going home in the end, of course! I like this book by the author of Pippi Longstocking, because I think so many children can relate to Lotta's anger.

Mari really liked this one, but I thought Lotta was a real brat. Why do so many little girls books have snotty main characters?

Junie B Jones is another one In this first book of several in a series by the same author as Pippi Longstocking, Lotta decides to move out when her mother insists she wear a sweater she finds itchy.

Lotta goes to "live" in the neighbor's shed attic, but decides when it gets dark that she'd rather be at home with her mom and dad and brother and sister.

Unlike the first Lotta book, which is composed of darling little vignettes, this has a continuing narrative arc. Charming and cathartic for a listening five year old, Lotta is genuinely naughty, but we love her anyway.

An excellent introduction to "chapter books". I remember reading this as a kid and all the other books by Astrid Lindgren while I still lived in Poland and now it is very interesting to see how much true facts about the Swedish society she conveyed in her books!

My mom got this book for my five-year-old son because she remembered her mom reading it to her and her sisters when she was a kid.

I really enjoyed reading it to Gavin and he dug it, too.

She is a bit apprehensive asking questions to her dad, but her mother is always obliging. Much of the humor is derived from the innocent but annoying questions that she asks of her mother, sometimes with Jonas and Maria for company.

Astrid Lindgren has written Lotta's stories for a very young reader. Though most of her stories are meant for children, Lotta is for the youngest possible reader.

For that reason, the stories are quite charming, feel-good and with a slight moral in the end. However, critics have felt that Lotta's escapades have universal appeal; there have been adults who have read the Lotta books with relish and have finished them with a tear in the eye and a lump in the throat, because of their excessive cuteness.

From to , Astrid Lindgren wrote several Lotta books. Each of these books has entered the legion of unforgettable child fiction and the whole collection is often bought by parents as a gift to their children.

And furthermore and most essentially, importantly, Lotta zieht um was also the very first Astrid Lindgren novel I read entirely on my own without having either my mother or my grandmothers read to me and thus, I have always had a most precious sense of nostalgia with regard to in particular Lotta zieht um , as it not only was a sweetly entertaining and fun reading journey for seven year old I, it also showed both my mother and me that I was indeed now more than ready to approach and tackle Astrid Lindgren on my own from thence on, and come Christmas, I received a huge stack of delightful Astrid Lindgren novels, including ALL of the Emil, the Noisy Village and the Madicken books.

However and frustratingly, this here British translation penned by Tom Geddes, with accompanying illustrations by Tony Ross really has been quite massively and personally disappointing.

For one, even the title of this translation, Lotta Makes a Mess! As while five year old Lotta indeed misbehaves and makes a bit of a mess when she uses scissors to destroy her woollen jumper, her woollen sweater, and then tosses it into the garbage can in order to cover up her deed, the main storyline presented in Lotta Makes a Mess!

Berg's and to also apologise for being in a foul mood all day and destroying her woollen jumper. And for two, it does most definitely narrationally and textually bother me more than a bit that Lotta's siblings who are called Jonas and Mia-Maria in Lotta zieht um and I believe also in the Swedish original have been rendered by Tom Geddes into Joe and Mary-Lou in Lotta Makes a Mess!

And therefore, while I still do believe that thematically and content wise, Tom Geddes has I guess sufficiently enough captured the feel and the scenarios of Astrid Lindgren's original and her intentions, textually, how he has titled the book and especially with regard to some of the word choices used including having Lotta move into Mrs.

Berg's junk loft instead of calling it an attic , he has definitely more than missed the proverbial boat for me personally.

Thus only a one star rating for this particular translation, for Lotta Makes a Mess! View all 7 comments. Shelves: reviewed-books , novel , children-s-books , recommended , fiction.

I enjoyed Lotta on Troublemaker Street — the follow-up story to The Children on Troublemaker Street — but suspect that I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it first.

Nonplussed, her mom descends the stairs to the kitchen. Soon afterwards, she calls up to tell Lotta that her hot chocolate is ready.

The illustration shows Lotta marching into the kitchen with Bamsie in tow. Berg, their neighbour, if she can live with her.

Berg nearby, I could hear alarm bells going off, especially during this day and age when most parents chauffeur their children everywhere, and in many cases, never let them out of their sight, let alone leave them home alone.

And certainly, Lotta is headstrong and determined, but not nearly as independent as Pippi, who does live alone and is the character Astrid Lindberg created that caused so much controversy over the years.

Suffice it to say that, in this translation at least, Mrs. After much reorganizing and dusting, and a system set up for receiving the delivery of food from Mrs.

The color cover picture and several black and white illustrations in the book are quite sweet. Lindgren definitely captures what it feels like to be an angry child.

The family and the neighbor are warm and appealing. I also loved the humor in the book. Even the street name is amusing.

Lotta wakes up one morning in a terrible mood, having dreamt that her older brother and sister were beating up on her beloved toy pig, Bamsie. Things progress from bad to worse when Mother won't let Lotta wear her Sunday dress, but instead insists that she wear a sweater that "tickles and scratches.

Berg's house, where she takes up residence in an old shed. Will Lotta ever move back in with her own family, the Nymans?

Lotta on Troublemaker Street was highly recommended by my friend Manny, whose own online review is a glowing homage to the humanity of Swedish parenting practices.

I too was impressed with the way in which Lotta's mother and father handle her defection, not to mention Mrs. Berg's calm acceptance of her presence.

Their respect for her feelings, the fact that they never try to coerce her into doing as they think best, but let her decide to come home on her own, struck me as quite wise.

Of course, it's not as if she were in any real danger But as appealing as this book may be to the adult reader, it is also an entertaining story that young readers will take to heart.

Who has not experienced, as a young child, that sense of overwhelming anger, sometimes for no good reason at all?

In Lotta, children will recognize an important aspect of their own emotional experience, depicted with compassion. Not surprisingly, given that it was written by Lindgren, this is a little gem!
